The inaugural warm-up match for Pakistan leading up to the ICC World Cup 2023 is slated to take place in Hyderabad without any spectators due to security concerns, as per the announcement made by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
Pakistan’s cricket squad, captained by Babar Azam, is set to face the 2019 World Cup runners-up, New Zealand, this Friday. However, the Hyderabad stadium will remain closed to fans during the match, in accordance with the guidance of local security authorities, as stated in a press release issued by the BCCI on Monday.
The official statement explained, “The match in Hyderabad coincides with local festivals, and significant gatherings are expected throughout the city.” Consequently, individuals who had previously purchased tickets for the game will receive a full refund.
Bilateral cricketing relations between India and Pakistan have been suspended due to strained political ties between the two neighboring nations. As a result, matches involving these two teams only occur within the context of multi-team tournaments.
Pakistan is preparing for another warm-up encounter against Australia on October 3 before beginning their quest for a second 50-overs ICC World Cup 2023 title against the Netherlands just three days later.
Despite a brief delay, the Pakistan squad received their visas on Monday and is scheduled to depart for India via Dubai on Wednesday.
