Following the completion of the hearing, NEPRA has deferred its decision on the request to increase the per-unit of electricity by Rs 4.66.
In a NEPRA session presided over by Chairman Waseem Mokhtar, the Central Power Purchasing Agency proposed a Rs 4.66 per unit price hike, and the regulatory authority will issue a decision after reviewing the presented data.
NEPRA was informed that the electricity demand significantly decreased in November compared to the same month last year, resulting in a 10% reduction in electricity production. This reduction, along with additional adjustment burdens, amounts to Rs 40 billion.
During the briefing, it was revealed that there is a lack of planning in the electricity department regarding high fuel cost adjustments in electricity prices. A NEPRA member expressed concerns about shutting down cost-effective plants for maintenance, which increases fuel costs. The member questioned the shutdown of these plants in winter, emphasizing a perceived lack of planning.
Regarding overbilling concerns, a NEPRA member stated that power companies were asked for an explanation. The Central Power Purchasing Agency responded by stating that they have requested a previous adjustment of Rs.
The Central Power Purchasing Agency had requested an increase in electricity prices yesterday, citing that during November, electricity production from water, nuclear, local coal, and imported coal exceeded the set limits. If approved, this adjustment could place a burden of up to Rs 40 billion on consumers, potentially resulting in a Rs 4.66 per unit increase in electricity costs.
