Ninety percent of the Pakistani beggars arrested in other countries were found to be people from Pakistan.

In a recent meeting of the Senate committee for Overseas Pakistanis, there was a surprising revelation related to Pakistani beggars. The secretary for overseas Pakistanis informed the committee that among all the people leaving Pakistan, beggars are going abroad the most.

They found that 90 percent of the beggars who were arrested in other countries turned out to be Pakistanis. The secretary explained that many Pakistani beggars go to Iraq and Saudi Arabia pretending to be pilgrims. Some people get visas for religious visits to Saudi Arabia, but then they engage in begging.

Most of the pickpockets caught in the grand mosque in Makkah are also Pakistani nationals. Iraq and Saudi Arabia have complained that their jails are filling up with Pakistani beggars who entered their countries illegally. This issue is now being considered a form of human trafficking.

The chairman of the committee mentioned that Japan had a need for skilled workers and only 200 Pakistanis went there, while 150,000 Indians and 91,000 Nepalese did. He pointed out that even though Pakistan has a large number of overseas Pakistanis, it lags behind in sending people abroad for work.

The secretary mentioned that Pakistan did sign an agreement with Japan in 2019 and provides Japanese language training, certified by Japan. However, Saudi Arabia rejected an initial proposal from Pakistan regarding Newtech’s offer.

The committee chairman suggested sending at least 50,000 trained workers to Saudi Arabia, given their demand for skilled labor.

The secretary also shared some statistics about overseas Pakistanis, with 1.6 million in the UAE and 200,000 in Qatar. He noted that people are willing to pay a significant amount of money to go abroad for job opportunities.

Senator Sherry Rehman from the Pakistan Peoples Party commented on the lost opportunities, mentioning that Nepal was sending skilled mountain sherpas to Pakistan, while Pakistani sherpas were less skilled.
