Islamabad: The government plans to raise gas bills ahead of winter.
According to insiders from the Ministry of Finance, there’s concern about a 46 billion rupee increase in the gas sector’s outstanding debt this financial year. They say that gas companies have faced a 46 billion rupee loss from July to September, leading to a total debt of 2700 billion rupees in the gas sector.
To cover a potential shortfall of 185 billion rupees, and 21 billion rupees if LNG prices aren’t increased for regular consumers, it’s been decided to increase gas prices by over 100% before an economic review.
Insiders report that a proposal for this gas bills increase has been prepared and will be presented in the upcoming Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) meeting.
