The government has decided to make changes to its agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), electricity discount for wealthy people banned and address the losses in the power sector.
According to official documents, there’s a plan to stop providing electricity discount to wealthy individuals. Instead, subsidies will be given directly to the poor and small-scale farmers.
The idea of offering direct subsidies to protected consumers is being discussed. A survey is planned to begin soon for this purpose, with the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation working together to prepare the plan by March next year. By December next year, the Electric City CNIC database will be connected to NSER as part of this project.
In addition to considering low electricity usage, the family’s socio-economic background will be taken into account when determining eligibility for the subsidy. The Ministry of Food Protection will create an action plan for farmer subsidies by March, with eligible farmers expected to start receiving subsidies from July 2026.
There’s also a plan to limit the cross subsidy on electricity to 20% along with electricity discount banning, and the possibility of providing direct electricity subsidies through the Ministry of Food Protection and the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation is being considered.
