Rishi Sunak is thinking about stopping young people from using cigarettes – according to news.

Rishi Sunak is thinking about a plan that could stop the next generation from using cigarettes.

The Prime Minister might make some of the strictest rules against smoking in the world. This would involve gradually increasing the age at which people can legally buy tobacco. The Guardian reported this, citing sources in the government.

It’s also possible that Rishi Sunak idea of fining people £10 for missing a doctor or hospital appointment might come back into consideration.

Downing Street didn’t say Rishi Sunak wasn’t thinking about these tougher rules on smoking.

Last year, a big review led by Dr. Javed Khan supported England following New Zealand’s plan to keep raising the age at which people can buy cigarettes. If this plan were put in place by 2026, it would mean that anyone who is 15 or younger now wouldn’t ever be able to buy cigarettes.

However, in April, the health minister, Neil O’Brien, seemed to say no to this idea. He said the government’s plan to make England smoke-free by 2030 would focus on helping people quit smoking instead of making bans.

Now, though, it looks like Rishi Sunak is exploring different ideas on how to reach England’s smoke-free goal.

In a report commissioned by the government and published in June 2022, Dr. Khan said that without quick action, England would miss the 2030 target by at least seven years. He said that the annual cost of smoking to society is about £17 billion, with £2.4 billion of that going to the NHS alone.

A government spokesperson said, “Smoking is a deadly habit that kills tens of thousands of people each year and puts a big burden on the NHS and the economy. We want to encourage more people to quit and meet our ambition to be smoke-free by 2030, which is why we have already taken steps to reduce smoking rates. This includes providing one million smokers in England with free vape kits through our ‘swap to stop’ program, launching a voucher scheme to encourage pregnant women to quit, and considering mandatory cigarette pack inserts.”

The legal age for buying cigarettes and other tobacco products in England and Wales is 18, which was raised from 16 in 2007 by the previous Labour government.
