The Foreign Office (FO) Spokesperson, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, expressed disapproval of New Delhi for involving Pakistani presenter Zainab Abbas in an unnecessary World Cup controversy. She mentioned that taking legal action against Zainab Abbas for her tweets was not the right move.
Baloch also pointed out that as the host of the World Cup, India is responsible for providing security and creating a favorable environment for the Pakistani cricket team.
Zainab Abbas, a presenter for the World Cup 2023, left India earlier this week following a complaint filed by an Indian lawyer over alleged “anti-Hindu” statements. While there were reports that she was deported, the International Cricket Council (ICC) confirmed that she left due to personal reasons and dismissed deportation claims.
An Indian lawyer had approached the police to file a complaint against Abbas for her statements. She had been excited about the opportunity to work in India when her role as a presenter was announced.
During the press briefing, the FO spokesperson also mentioned that Islamabad was in contact with Indian authorities regarding visas for Pakistani journalists and fans who want to attend the World Cup. They demanded the prompt issuance of visas.
It was reported that the Indian embassy had begun processing visas for Pakistani journalists to cover the event. However, despite the event being underway, the visas had not been issued. This delay had caused frustration, as according to ICC regulations, the host country is responsible for providing visas to fans and journalists covering the event.
