Authorities have captured a group trying to smuggle lizards from Australia to Hong Kong, detaining four individuals, three men, and one woman.
The New South Wales Police reveal that the market value of these lizards is 1.2 million Australian dollars. The arrested individuals face charges related to the proceeds of crime, involvement in a criminal group, and other offenses. If found guilty, they could be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
Following the discovery of 59 live lizards smuggled to Hong Kong in September of the previous year, a special task force was established in Australia. In the recent weeks’ operation, the task force successfully recovered 118 lizards, three snakes, and 25 deceased lizards.
According to the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), Hong Kong has been a significant player in the global trade of exotic animals in recent decades.
