Luis Rubiales Resign Details
Luis Rubiales, the Spanish FA president, has resigned due to a controversial incident in which he kissed a player after Spain’s Women’s World Cup victory. FIFA suspended him over the kiss, and the Spanish football federation had previously called for his resignation.
In an interview, Luis Rubiales resign was explained by him that he made this decision because he couldn’t continue his work and felt that his attitude could affect important third parties.
He also posted his resignation on social media, confirming that he had stepped down from his position with the Spanish football federation and as one of UEFA’s vice presidents. Luis Rubiales expressed that the suspension and ongoing proceedings made it impossible for him to return to his role and that holding onto it would not lead to anything positive.
He also cited the impact on his family during the aftermath of the incident as a reason for his resignation.
The Spanish football federation confirmed his resignation. This move comes after Mr. Rubiales faced criticism and legal action, including a lawsuit for sexual assault and coercion following the kiss incident.
The complaint was filed by Jennifer Hermoso, Spain’s captain, who accused him of sexual assault when he kissed her on the lips during an awards ceremony. This legal action could lead to criminal charges, alongside investigations by Spain’s top sport court for “serious misconduct” and FIFA.
The court is responsible for officially pressing charges, and a sexual assault charge in Spain carries a prison sentence ranging from one to four years.
The footballer has consistently stated that the kiss was not consensual. In contrast, Mr. Rubiales had previously resisted resigning, asserting that it was a “spontaneous, mutual, euphoric, and consensual” act.
Mr. Rubiales had admitted to making “some evident errors” that he deeply regrets but maintained that there was no aggression or discomfort during the kiss. He stated, “There was not even the slightest discomfort, but an overflowing joy in both. The spontaneity and happiness of the historic moment led us to engage in a mutual and consensual act, driven by great enthusiasm.”
