Electricity Prices Under Review: NEPRA Seeks Rs3.53 per Unit Increase.

The electricity prices are anticipated to witness an increase of approximately Rs3.53 per unit. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) has filed a request with the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) for a rate hike through fuel price adjustment.

If approved, this decision will not impact K-Electric consumers. The government is preparing to impose an extra financial load of Rs40 billion on electricity consumers, as the CPPA has appealed to NEPRA for a Rs3.53 per unit increase in electricity bills.

NEPRA is scheduled to conduct a hearing on the application on November 29, addressing the request for monthly fuel adjustment in the October bills. According to the application, the production cost of electricity in October was Rs11.42, whereas consumers were billed at Rs7.89 per unit. The fuel adjustment for October is calculated to be Rs3.50.

In October, power generation from RLNG exceeded 20%, as indicated in the NEPRA application. Additionally, 7.34% of electricity was generated from gas, and 32% from hydel sources.

While the approval of the application would result in an extra burden of about Rs40 billion on electricity consumers, K-Electric consumers will be exempt from this adjustment.
