Late on Monday night, a powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 on the Richter scale struck China’s Southern Xinjiang region, causing significant seismic activity in the area.
The National Center for Seismology reported the earthquake at 23:39:11 IST, with the epicenter located in Southern Xinjiang, China, at a depth of 80 kilometers. The tremors were strongly felt in the Delhi-National Capital Region, leading residents to seek safety. The aftermath of the earthquake has resulted in several injuries and reports of collapsed houses along the China-Kyrgyzstan border.
In response to the seismic event, the Xinjiang railway department took immediate action by halting operations and suspending 27 trains. Chinese media reported 14 aftershocks in Wushi County, the epicenter, with the largest recorded at a magnitude of 5.3 and located approximately 17 kilometers away.
The impact extended beyond the immediate vicinity, with Kyrgyzstan reporting injuries on their side of the border. At 2:00 am in China’s Xinjiang region, a 7.0-magnitude aftershock struck the mountainous China-Kyrgyzstan border, causing significant damage. In rural Wushi County, two residential houses and livestock sheds collapsed, resulting in at least three reported injuries. A disaster relief team was dispatched to assist in the affected areas.
Video footage circulated on social media depicted chaos as household items crashed to the floor, and citizens evacuated their homes for safety. In Aksu, residents described intense shaking despite freezing temperatures. Reports from Kyrgyzstan’s capital, Bishkek, confirmed the earthquake’s impact, causing walls to shake and furniture to shift. While Bishkek reported no casualties or damage, neighboring villages in China and Kazakhstan experienced tremors.
Following the initial earthquake, a series of small aftershocks, some with magnitudes as high as 5.5, occurred. In Almaty, Kazakhstan’s largest city, citizens took precautionary measures by streaming outside. This seismic event comes a day after a devastating landslide in southwest China and amid ongoing recovery efforts from a December earthquake in northwest China that resulted in casualties and displaced thousands.
