Late on Friday, a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Pacific coast of Guatemala. Some people left their homes, and initial reports mentioned damage to buildings. The US Geological Survey (USGS) verified the earthquake, and it was also felt in El Salvador.
Luckily, right after the earthquake that happened just after midnight when many people were asleep, there were no immediate reports of injuries. El Salvador officials called it a “strong” quake and are keeping a close eye on the situation.
The earthquake’s epicenter was close to Taxisco, Guatemala, around 60 miles south of Guatemala City. Alarms went off in the city, and scared residents had to leave their homes. In the town of San Pablo Jocopilas, northwest of the quake’s center, parts of a church fell, according to Guatemala’s emergency services agency, CONRED.
The earthquake, with a depth of 108 km (67 miles), was reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).
