India’s sun-monitoring spacecraft is making its way towards the center of the solar system. The mission, called Aditya-L1, started its journey on September 2 and is designed to observe the outer layers of the Sun.
Recently, it reached a significant point in its journey where it moved beyond the Earth’s influence. Aditya-L1, named after the Hindu Sun deity, has traveled about 920,000 kilometers, which is a little more than half of its total journey.
At this stage, the gravitational forces between the Earth and the spacecraft balance out, allowing it to maintain a stable orbit around the Sun.
The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) noted that this is the second time they have successfully sent a spacecraft beyond Earth’s sphere of influence, with the first being the Mars Orbiter Mission.
This achievement comes after India’s successful lunar mission, where they became the first country to land a craft near the Moon’s south pole.
