In bad news for people already worried about high prices, Nepra has given the green light for a Rs7.0562 per unit increase in electricity prices charges for March. This means consumers will have to bear an extra burden of about Rs56 billion, which could go up to nearly Rs66 billion with the added GST.
This hike affects everyone except electric vehicle charging stations and low-income consumers. Nepra’s decision came after power distribution companies asked for a slightly higher increase. This increase is mainly because of a drop in hydropower production and issues with transmitting power effectively.
There’s concern about the sharp rise in fuel costs for January 2024, prompting an investigation by Nepra to find out why it surged so much.
