WASHINGTON: The State Department said today that even after Pakistan’s caretaker cabinet approved the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project, discussions about it are still ongoing between the US and Pakistan. They didn’t give specific details about what they’re discussing.
The State Department commented on this when asked if the project is still a concern for the US and whether it’s starting again.
They mentioned that helping Pakistan with its energy problem is important for the US. They said they’ve supported adding about 4,000 MW of energy in Pakistan, which has significantly increased electricity for over 50 million people.
They also talked about the US-Pakistan Green Alliance, a program focusing on environmental issues like water management, agriculture, and renewable energy.
This statement from the State Department comes after Pakistan’s caretaker government decided to delay filing an appeal against US sanctions related to the gas pipeline project, because of the current situation in the world.
According to reports, decisions regarding the gas pipeline project have been approved by the Ministerial Oversight Committee. The Petroleum Division has prepared a summary based on these decisions.
The day before, the caretaker federal cabinet committee approved the project with plans to finish it in a year, which is a big step forward in boosting the country’s energy security.
The pipeline, which is 1931 kilometers long, will cost $158 million. Most of it will be laid in Iran, with the rest in Pakistan up to Gwadar.
It’s worth noting that Iran has already finished laying a 900-kilometer pipeline. The project was supposed to be done in 2015 but faced delays.
