After the elections, it is anticipated that talks for a second review with the IMF will take place.

Following the general elections on February 8, the IMF plans to send a review team to Pakistan for discussions on the $3 billion Standby Arrangement program.

The new government formation is expected to finish by the end of February 2024, prompting the IMF review team to visit Islamabad before the new government is in place.

Government sources indicate that the IMF hasn’t confirmed the exact schedule for the second review. Therefore, discussions are likely to occur after the upcoming general elections.

The IMF initially proposed the second review between December 2023 and March 1, 2024, but Pakistan has suggested March 15, 2024, as the new date for the review. This change allows for the possibility of holding talks after the elections, as the current standby program concludes on April 12.

If the second review concludes by March, the IMF’s executive board will have sufficient time to release the final tranche of $1.1 billion for Pakistan by April.
