In Islamabad, the Chairman of the National Database Registration Authority (NADRA), Lieutenant General Munir Afsar, told the members of the Senate Committee on Interior that some of his organization’s employees were involved in making fake Computerized National Identity Cards (fake CNICs). This came up during a discussion about the problem of fake CNICs, the availability of people’s family data on the black market, and the issuance of multiple SIM cards on a single CNIC, which are being used for illegal activities.
Fake CNICs
Lieutenant General Munir Afsar mentioned that they have taken action against employees who were doing anything illegal specially making fake CNICs. So far, about 84 officials have been suspended. He also explained that there is no specific law dealing with privacy issues, which is why some employees manage to avoid punishment. The Senate committee suggested using more modern measures to address these problems.
In a separate incident, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) reported that, along with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) Cyber Crime Circle, they arrested five individuals in a joint operation at a mobile phone company franchise on Kohat Road in Peshawar. These individuals were involved in providing illegal SIM cards using Afghan passports. The franchise was reportedly run by an Afghan national, and they were selling activated SIM cards to Afghan individuals for Rs. 3000 each. The authorities also seized five laptops and eight mobile phones containing scanned passport data.
The PTA mentioned that this was the 12th such operation this year. In light of the increasing incidents of terrorism, Pakistan has set a deadline of November 1 for all illegal Afghan residents to return to their home country. The caretaker interior minister, Sarfraz Bugti, explained that this crackdown is necessary because Afghan nationals have been involved in a significant number of recent attacks in Pakistan, including suicide bombings and attacks on military installations.
