The temporary Power Minister, Muhammad Ali, has said that we will have gas in winters for only eight hours each day because our natural gas supply is running low.
He mentioned that this gas in winters shortage has been happening for the past few years, and it will continue this year because we don’t have enough gas to provide it 24 hours a day.
Just like last year, the plan is to make sure we have gas for eight hours each day. Unfortunately, our natural gas reserves have decreased by 18% compared to last year.
However, the minister is hopeful that there will be fewer gas shortages for industries in December because they’ve arranged for two shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
He explained that they are trying their best to make sure there is enough supply of gas in winters for homes, industries, and the fertilizer sector, with as little disruption as possible.
He also mentioned that they are taking strong action against people who steal electricity and have already collected 16 billion rupees from those who haven’t paid their electricity bills. They are planning to change the management of power distribution companies and might give them to private companies for a long-term agreement.
Additionally, the government is thinking about raising the prices of gas, but this decision will be discussed in a meeting called the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) and will only take effect after approval from the federal cabinet. This could lead to a small increase in gas bills for some consumers.
