Giorgio Napolitano, who used to be the president of Italy, has passed away.

Giorgio Napolitano, a former president of Italy, has passed away at the age of 98. He had been unwell for some time and passed away at a hospital in Rome. He is survived by his wife and two sons, Giovanni and Giulio.

After his death was announced, condolences poured in from various quarters, including Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office, other politicians, the Vatican, and more.

Pope Francis expressed his appreciation for Napolitano’s leadership and choices during critical times in Italy’s history in a message to Napolitano’s wife, Clio Bittoni.

Giorgio Napolitano Service Period

Napolitano served as president from 2006 and was re-elected for an unprecedented second term in 2013. He played a key role in guiding Italy through a financial crisis in 2011.

He retired from the presidency in 2015, citing his advanced age. Earlier in his career, he had been elected to the Italian and European parliaments in the 1950s and held positions such as interior minister and speaker of the lower house of parliament.
