Right before Michael Jackson did his famous moonwalk dance for the very first time, Michael Jackson hat was thrown by him to the side of the stage. Now, after four decades, that black hat is going up for auction in Paris.
Michael Jackson Hat Auction
This special sale is happening at the Hotel Drouot in Paris on September 26. They expect the black fedora to sell for somewhere between 60,000 to 100,000 euros (which is around $64,000 to $107,000).
Even though this hat is the star of about 200 rock-related items being auctioned, Arthur Perault, who’s organizing the auction at the Artpeges gallery, mentioned that the value of Jackson’s items has gone down recently because of the sale of fake items and accusations against him.
Michael Jackson has faced accusations of child abuse for a long time, which his heirs still dispute. The singer denied these accusations until his death in 2009 at the age of 50.
The King of Pop took off this hat while he was performing his hit song “Billie Jean” during a televised Motown concert in 1983 when he was at the peak of his fame. Right after that, Jackson introduced his signature move, the moonwalk, where he seems to glide backward while appearing to walk forward.
A person named Adam Kelly picked up Michael Jackson hat, thinking that someone from Jackson’s team would come to get it, but that didn’t happen, as Perault explained. He kept the hat for several years, and it has passed through a couple of private collectors before reaching Paris.
Along with Michael Jackson hat, other items being auctioned include a guitar that belonged to the legendary bluesman T-Bone Walker, which could sell for up to 150,000 euros. There’s also a suit worn by Martin Gore of Depeche Mode and one of Madonna’s gold records.
