Portuguese village faces a unique flood of its own type. While many countries worldwide grapple with devastating floods causing unprecedented casualties, a picturesque Portuguese town experienced an extraordinary and colorful deluge, fortunately devoid of any fatalities.
Residents of a quaint coastal village in Portugal found themselves in astonishment as a torrent of red wine surged through their streets on a fateful Sunday, triggered by an unprecedented mishap.
Flood in Portuguese village Details
Two immense tanks belonging to Levira Distillery, carrying a staggering 600,000 gallons of the alcoholic beverage, unexpectedly toppled over, literally painting the town red.
In a widely shared online video, the crimson liquid cascaded down a steep hill in the 2,000-person community of São Lourenço do Bairro, a Portuguese village.
An environmental alert was issued due to the substantial spill, as the quantity of wine released could have filled an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
Promptly responding to the situation, authorities took action to prevent the wine from transforming the usually seaweed-green Certima River into a wine-red spectacle.
According to local reports, the Anadia Fire Department successfully contained and redirected the wine flow away from the river, channeling it instead into a nearby field.
Additionally, firefighters noted that wine had seeped into the basement of a house adjacent to the distillery. Levira Distillery expressed remorse for the incident and announced their efforts to remediate the wine-soaked soil.
“We take full responsibility for the expenses related to cleaning and repairing the damage, with teams already mobilized for immediate action,” stated the distillery in a formal announcement.
