Argentinian soccer star Lionel Messi is now the most loved athlete in the United States, surpassing famous names like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Tiger Woods.
This news comes from a recent survey by SSRS, as reported by Essentially Sports.
It’s the first time in thirty years that a soccer player has become the top favorite in American sports, beating out long-standing stars like Jordan, Woods, Peyton Manning, Kobe Bryant, and Tom Brady, who have been popular since 1995.
Messi’s rise in popularity in the US is linked to his connection with Inter Miami, a Major League Soccer team led by him. Since he joined the club in June 2023, there’s been a big increase in MLS fans, going from 35.3% to 37%.
The survey also showed that Messi has been more popular than his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, since 2021. His popularity increased after winning the 2022 World Cup and then again after joining Inter Miami.
Meanwhile, Ronaldo’s popularity has stayed low since 2022, around 5% according to the survey.
Messi’s association with Inter Miami has not only boosted his personal fame but also increased the club’s value from $600 million to $1.03 billion. This shows how much influence Messi has and how soccer is becoming more important in American sports.
The survey also found that Inter Miami is now the most liked MLS club among American fans, surpassing other teams like LA Galaxy, which was previously co-owned by David Beckham.
