Cipher Case Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood were given a 10-year jail term with tough work involved.
Rawalpindi: In the secret code case, the special court has given a 10-year jail sentence to PTI founder Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood Qureshi.
The case was heard by Special Court Judge Abul Hasanat Zulqarnain at Adiala Jail. Both Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood attended the court session.
The judge noted that the lawyers were not present, and the State Defense Council was provided. The lawyers mentioned that they would cross-examine.
The judge expressed dissatisfaction, stating clearly that there was mistrust. During the hearing, Questionnaire 342 was given to Shah Mehmood Qureshi and Imran Khan. They stated that their lawyers were absent, making it difficult to record their statements.
Later, the court recorded Imran Khan’s statement, where he mentioned that the secret code had reached his office, but the military secretary was responsible for its security. No clues about the code were found.
After a brief hearing, the court announced a 10-year hard labor sentence for Imran Khan and Shah Mehmood in the secret code case.
It’s worth noting that Imran Khan had previously challenged the appointment of government lawyer Safai in the Islamabad High Court for this case.
CIPHER CASE:
Imran Khan had created a conspiracy narrative against his government, claiming that the US was involved in overthrowing it based on messages or ciphers from the Pakistani ambassador to the US. However, the PTI government denied this position in a committee meeting on national security.
An audio leak of Imran Khan and his former secretary Azam Khan discussing the cipher revealed Imran Khan’s statement, suggesting they should play it without naming America. The federal cabinet then assigned the FIA to investigate the matter.
Azam Khan, the former Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister during the PTI regime, was considered close to Imran Khan.
Former DG ISPR Lt. Gen. Babar Iftikhar mentioned that there was an attempt to dramatize the cipher for political gain, spreading rumors and false news.
