In Islamabad, the Senate, consisting of 14 senators, voted to delay the upcoming general elections on February 8. During the meeting led by Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani, caretaker Information Minister Murtaza Solangi and PML-N Senator Afnanullah opposed the resolution, while PPP Senator Bahra Mand Tangi and PTI’s Gardeep Singh remained silent. Former PTI Senator Abdul Qadir supported the resolution.
The resolution, presented by Senator Dilawar Khan, cited severe cold in many areas, making it challenging for people to participate in the election. It also mentioned security concerns, citing recent attacks on JUI(F) members, Mohsin Dawar, and security forces in KP and Balochistan. The resolution emphasized threat alerts from intelligence agencies during election rallies.
Senator Afnanullah opposed the resolution, questioning the reasons and comparing it to historical examples where elections weren’t postponed due to weather conditions. He expressed concerns about the constitutional implications of delaying elections.
Other senators, including Samina Mumtaz and Kahda Babar, supported the resolution, citing changing climate conditions and challenging areas where elections cannot be effectively conducted. The Senate unanimously approved the resolution to postpone the general elections on February 8.
However, senior journalist Shahzeb Khanzada highlighted that the resolution, aimed at postponing the elections, lacks constitutional or legal standing. Despite the Senate’s decision, preparations for the general elections on February 8 are ongoing, as per the Election Commission’s schedule. The Chief Justice of Pakistan had previously emphasized the fixed nature of the election date during a court hearing.
