Several prominent political figures, including Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, Akhtar Mengal, and Firdous Shamim Naqvi, have received approval to participate in the upcoming elections on February 8. The decision came after election tribunals reviewed objections against the acceptance or rejection of their nomination papers.
Awami Muslim League (AML) chief Sheikh Rashid’s nomination papers for NA-56 and NA-57 were accepted, while Balochistan National Party (BNP) head Akhtar Mengal secured permission to contest from NA-264 Quetta after a tribunal overturned the rejection based on his Dubai work permit.
Similarly, the nomination papers of PML-Zia chief Ijazul Haq were accepted for NA-55, as the tribunal dismissed objections raised by the returning officer.
Former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry’s appeal against the rejection of his papers from two Jhelum seats is under consideration, with the tribunal issuing notices to the Election Commission.
Additionally, an appellate election tribunal directed the acceptance of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Firdous Shamim Naqvi’s nomination papers for NA-236 East Karachi, overturning the returning officer’s rejection.
In other legal proceedings, the Abbottabad circuit bench of the Peshawar High Court summoned Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar and the returning officer in a petition challenging the clearance of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers for NA-15.
The Lahore High Court appellate tribunal issued notices to the returning officer on appeals against the approval of Nawaz Sharif’s nomination papers for NA-130 and the rejection of nomination papers for former Punjab chief minister Parvez Elahi, his son Moonis Elahi, and other family members.
Furthermore, an Election Tribunal at the Multan Bench of Lahore High Court accepted an application against the rejection of nomination papers for former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, his son Zain Qureshi, and his daughter Mehrabano Qureshi, ordering the production of records on January 6 for further review.
