In Islamabad, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) shared information about the candidates who submitted nomination papers for the upcoming 2024 general elections. They also disclosed the number of accepted and rejected papers.
According to the ECP, 6,449 candidates have received approval for their nomination papers. This includes 6,094 male candidates and 355 female candidates competing for National Assembly seats in Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad Capital Territory.
The Returning Officers (ROs) turned down the papers of 1,024 candidates, comprising 934 men and 90 women, aiming for National Assembly seats.
Overall, 7,473 candidates, including 445 women, submitted nomination papers for the National Assembly. Additionally, the ROs, appointed by the electoral body, accepted 16,262 nomination papers out of the 18,478 submitted by candidates, which includes 17,670 male candidates and 808 female candidates, for the four provincial assemblies.
Nomination papers of 2,216 candidates, comprising 2,081 men and 135 women, were not approved by the Returning Officers (ROs) for provincial assemblies.
In total, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) informed that 22,711 nomination papers for both National Assembly and provincial assembly general seats have received approval. Out of these, 21,684 candidates are men, and 1,027 are women. The ECP disclosed that a total of 25,951 papers were submitted.
During the five-day scrutiny period starting on December 25, prominent political figures like Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) faced setbacks as the electoral body rejected their nomination papers from different constituencies.
However, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) experienced success, with leaders like Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, and others securing ECP’s approval for their nomination papers.
For those whose papers were rejected, there is an option to appeal the decision to the top electoral body by January 3. The ECP’s Appellate Tribunal will make decisions on the appeals by January 10, followed by the publication of the revised list of candidates on January 11.
