Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf has been stripped of its bat symbol by Election Comission.

The Election Commission has revoked the bat symbol from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) due to non-compliance with the party constitution during intra-party elections.

A five-member commission, headed by the Chief Election Commissioner, declared the decision regarding PTI’s intra-party election.

According to the Election Commission of Pakistan, PTI failed to conduct elections in accordance with its party constitution, rendering the party ineligible for the bat symbol.

Following the Election Commission’s ruling, Barrister Gohar Ali is no longer the chairman of PTI.

The detailed decision of the Election Commission on the bat symbol issue states that the intra-party elections of PTI faced challenges from petitioners, and the political finance wing of the Election Commission raised objections.

The judgment highlighted that the alleged new chairman of PTI submitted documents related to intra-party elections without proper authorization. There were no nomination papers in the PTI office, and the aspirant pursued the election symbol of the bat without permission.

The decision mentioned objections raised by the Political Finance Wing regarding the appointment of Niazullah Niazi as the Chief Election Commissioner.

According to the Election Commission’s decision, no constitutional forum appointed Umar Ayub as the Secretary General, questioning the authority of Umar Ayub and Niazullah Niazi to hold their positions. PTI’s Chief Election Commissioner was deemed to lack the authority to conduct elections.

The verdict also stated that no resignation from the party’s former Chief Election Commissioner, Jamal Akbar Ansari, was received by the Election Commission. The term of office-bearers elected in 2017 had expired, and there was no proper procedure followed in the appointment of the PTI Election Commissioner.

The decision further noted that Umar Ayub was never elected as the Constitutional Secretary General of PTI, and there was no provision in the constitution for the chairman to extend the term of office bearers. PTI was constitutionally required to be run by the chief organizer before intra-party elections.

According to the Election Commission, PTI’s chairman failed to conduct any election until June 10, 2022, and the election held thereafter did not comply with the constitution. It is important to note that the Election Commission had previously instructed PTI to redo its intra-party elections.

PTI conducted new intra-party elections, resulting in Gauhar Khan being elected unopposed as chairman. However, a founding member of PTI, Akbar S. Babar, filed a petition alleging that PTI’s elections did not adhere to its constitution. The case reached the Election Commission, and despite a temporary halt by the Peshawar High Court, the Election Commission ultimately announced its decision, withdrawing the bat symbol from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf.
