The victory of the Miss France winner described as ‘androgynous’ has ignited discussions about the concept of ‘wokeism.’

Eve Gilles, a 20-year-old contestant known for her “androgynous” style with a short, boyish haircut, secured the title of Miss France 2024, triggering discussions and accusations of the pageant embracing “woke” ideals.

Representing the northernmost region of France, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Gilles made history as the first contestant with a pixie cut to win the title at the final event in Dijon.

Challenging Beauty Norms

Commenting on her victory, she stated, “We’re used to seeing beautiful Misses with long hair, but I chose an androgynous look with short hair,” emphasizing that every “woman is different, we’re all unique.”

Gilles has been vocal about her aim to diversify beauty standards and bring modernization to the pageant, which has faced criticism for its perceived sexism.

“I would like to show that the competition is evolving and society too, that the representation of women is diverse. In my opinion, beauty is not limited to a haircut or shapes that we have… or not,” she expressed on stage.

Public Reaction to Judges’ Decision

The Miss France contest relies on a combination of public votes and judgments from a panel of seven female judges. The decision to crown Gilles elicited mixed reactions, with some criticizing it on social media as embracing “woke” inclusivity and suggesting that Miss France is departing from its traditional focus on beauty. Others defended Gilles and the judges, arguing for a more inclusive definition of beauty.

Political Figures Support Gilles

Left-wing French politicians, including Green MP Sandrine Rousseau and communist party national secretary Fabien Roussel, voiced support for Gilles, condemning the criticism she faced and highlighting the importance of embracing women in all their diversity.

Pageant Modernization Efforts

In recent years, the Miss France organization has aimed to modernize by allowing candidates of any age, mothers, wives, and even trans women to participate. The first time a trans woman competed in the Miss Paris contest was in 2022.

Critics, however, contend that these changes are superficial and argue that the pageant still perpetuates harmful beauty standards.

Eve Gilles’ crowning as Miss France 2023 has ignited a debate about beauty norms, inclusivity, and the future direction of the pageant. While some view Gilles’ win as a step towards progress, others criticize it as succumbing to political correctness. The controversy underscores the complex and often contradictory perspectives on beauty and gender.
