The Caretaker Energy Minister, Muhammad Ali, expressed concern over the high taxes in the petroleum sector, emphasizing the need for a reassessment of the Rs 60 per liter petrol levy. During the Senate Standing Committee on Energy meeting chaired by Senator Azam Nazir Tarar, the Energy Minister advocated for a review of the taxes applied to the petrol industry.
Muhammad Ali also suggested that the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) should directly collect income tax instead of including it in bills. He recommended the elimination of cross-subsidy nationwide, the introduction of fixed charges in the power sector to ensure consistent revenue regardless of the season, and the consideration of electricity theft as a punishable offense.
Additionally, the Energy Minister mentioned that an ordinance addressing electricity theft has been signed and will be enforced soon. He urged the removal of government interference with Distribution Companies (DISCOs) and emphasized the need to find a solution for the electricity tariff structure and capacity payments.
