Amid financial challenges arising from declining advertising revenue and increased competition from digital news outlets, a Canadian radio station has announced a 10% reduction in its workforce over the next year.
The president and CEO of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Catherine Tate, acknowledged that her organization is facing challenges similar to those in the domestic media industry. However, she emphasized that there is no alternative but to downsize the workforce.
Tate outlined a plan to lay off 600 employees within the year, with the initial phase expected to be completed soon. The proposed layoffs include 250 employees from the English language network, 250 from the French language department, and 100 from technical and support staff. Additionally, there is a program aimed at reducing another 200 positions.
According to Tate, the entire restructuring process is anticipated to save CBC 125 million Canadian dollars (92.3 million US dollars).
